Used For:
Olanzapine is an atypical antipsychotic used to treat:
- Schizophrenia
- Bipolar disorder (manic or mixed episodes)
- Major depressive disorder (MDD) (as an add-on with other antidepressants)
- Agitation associated with schizophrenia or bipolar disorder
Side Effects:
Common side effects:
- Drowsiness or sedation
- Weight gain
- Increased appetite
- Dizziness
- Dry mouth
- Constipation
Serious side effects:
- High blood sugar (risk of diabetes)
- High cholesterol
- Extrapyramidal symptoms (tremors, rigidity, restlessness)
- Tardive dyskinesia (involuntary facial or body movements)
- Low blood pressure (orthostatic hypotension)
- Increased risk of stroke in elderly patients with dementia
Precautions:
- Diabetes & Metabolic Issues: Can increase blood sugar and weight. Regular monitoring is needed.
- Heart Conditions: Can cause low blood pressure or irregular heart rhythms.
- Elderly Patients: Increased risk of stroke in dementia-related psychosis (not recommended).
- Liver & Kidney Disease: Dose adjustments may be necessary.
- Alcohol & CNS Depressants: Can increase drowsiness and sedation.
