Used For:

Zoledronic Acid is a bisphosphonate used to:

• Treat osteoporosis – Reduces fracture risk in postmenopausal women and men.
• Prevent bone loss – In patients using steroids (glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis).
• Treat Paget’s disease of bone – Helps regulate bone remodeling.
• Manage bone complications in cancer – Used in multiple myeloma and bone metastases from solid tumors.
• Lower high blood calcium levels (Hypercalcemia of malignancy) – Helps control calcium in cancer patients.

Side Effects:

Common Side Effects:

• Flu-like symptoms (fever, chills, muscle pain)
• Fatigue, headache
• Nausea, vomiting
• Low calcium levels (Hypocalcemia)

Serious Side Effects:

• Jaw bone problems (Osteonecrosis of the Jaw) – Rare but serious; good dental hygiene is important.
• Severe kidney damage – Monitor kidney function before and after treatment.
• Low calcium levels – Can cause muscle cramps, tingling, or irregular heartbeat.
• Unusual thigh bone fractures – Long-term use may increase this risk.

Precautions:

• Hydration is key – Drink plenty of fluids before infusion to protect the kidneys.
• Check kidney function – Not recommended for patients with severe kidney disease.
• Monitor calcium & vitamin D levels – Supplements may be needed.
