Used For:

Omeprazole is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) commonly used to treat gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), stomach ulcers, and conditions where the stomach produces too much acid, such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach, which helps alleviate symptoms like heartburn, acid reflux, and stomach discomfort. Omeprazole is also used to heal damage to the esophagus caused by acid reflux and to prevent ulcers in people taking nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).

Side Effects:

Common side effects of omeprazole include headache, stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation. Long-term use of omeprazole may increase the risk of bone fractures, kidney problems, or low magnesium levels. Rare but serious side effects can include allergic reactions, liver problems, or severe diarrhea due to a bacterial infection in the intestines (Clostridium difficile). It may also increase the risk of certain infections due to reduced stomach acidity.

Precautions:

Omeprazole should be used with caution in individuals with liver disease, as dose adjustments may be necessary. It can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners, antifungals, and some HIV drugs, so it’s important to inform your healthcare provider about all medications being taken. Omeprazole should not be used for prolonged periods without medical supervision. People who experience persistent stomach pain, blood in the stool, or unintentional weight loss should consult their healthcare provider, as these could be signs of more serious conditions. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their healthcare provider before using omeprazole, as its safety in these situations is not fully established.
