Used For:

Lisinopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor used primarily to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure. It helps to lower blood pressure by relaxing blood vessels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood. Lisinopril is also used to improve survival after heart attacks and to manage kidney problems associated with diabetes (diabetic nephropathy). Additionally, it may be prescribed to treat left ventricular dysfunction following a heart attack.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of lisinopril include dizziness, headache, fatigue, and a dry cough. Other potential side effects include low blood pressure (hypotension), elevated potassium levels (hyperkalemia), and a rash. Rare but serious side effects may include swelling of the face, lips, or throat (angioedema), kidney problems, or a decrease in white blood cell count. Patients should report any persistent symptoms to their healthcare provider.

Precautions:

Lisinopril should be used with caution in individuals with kidney problems, as it is eliminated through the kidneys, and dosage adjustments may be needed. It should not be combined with certain medications like potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics, as this can lead to dangerously high potassium levels. Dehydration, particularly in hot weather or when taking diuretics, should be avoided.
