Used For:

  • Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) Infection:
    Often used in combination with other agents (such as pegylated interferon or direct-acting antivirals) to treat chronic hepatitis C.
  • Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) Infections:
    In certain cases, particularly in severe RSV infections in hospitalized infants.
  • Other Viral Infections:
    Has been used in the treatment of viral hemorrhagic fevers such as Lassa fever.

Side Effects:

  • Hemolytic Anemia:
    A common and significant adverse effect, requiring regular monitoring of blood counts.
  • General Symptoms:
    Fatigue, weakness, headache, and dizziness.
  • Gastrointestinal Issues:
    Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Respiratory Symptoms:
    Cough.
  • Dermatological Reactions:
    Rash or itching.
  • Other:
    Insomnia and potential mood changes in some patients.

Precautions:

  • Teratogenicity:
    Ribavirin is known to be teratogenic and embryotoxic. It is contraindicated in pregnant women and in men whose partners are pregnant. Both male and female patients must use effective contraception during treatment and for a period after discontinuation.
