Used For:

Cefotaxime is a third-generation cephalosporin antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including:

  • Respiratory tract infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Sepsis (blood infections)
  • Meningitis
  • Bone and joint infections
  • Gonorrhea

Side Effects:

  • Common:

    • Nausea, vomiting
    • Diarrhea
    • Pain or swelling at the injection site
    • Headache

  • Serious:

    • Allergic reactions (rash, swelling, breathing difficulties)
    • Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) infection (severe diarrhea)
    • Liver enzyme abnormalities
    • Kidney problems (swelling, fatigue, decreased urine output)
    • Severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson Syndrome)
    • Seizures (rare but possible in high doses or kidney failure patients)

Precautions:

  • Allergy to Cephalosporins or Penicillins: Avoid if allergic.
  • Kidney Disease: Dose adjustment may be needed.
  • Liver Disease: Monitor liver function during treatment.
  • Clostridioides difficile Risk: Can cause severe diarrhea; report if persistent.
