Used For:

Xgeva (denosumab) is used to prevent bone complications in patients with cancers that have spread to the bone (bone metastases). It is also prescribed to treat giant cell tumors of the bone that cannot be surgically removed and to manage bone loss in certain conditions. Denosumab works by inhibiting a protein called RANKL, reducing bone breakdown and strengthening bone density.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include fatigue, weakness, joint pain, back pain, and nausea. Some individuals may experience low calcium levels (hypocalcemia), diarrhea, or increased risk of infections. Rare but serious side effects include osteonecrosis of the jaw (a severe jawbone condition) and atypical thigh fractures. Severe allergic reactions, such as rash or difficulty breathing, are also rare but possible.

Precautions:

Patients should ensure adequate calcium and vitamin D intake before and during treatment to prevent low calcium levels. Xgeva is not recommended for individuals with severe hypocalcemia or those who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Regular monitoring of calcium levels, kidney function, and dental health is advised. Inform your doctor of any existing medical conditions or other medications being taken, especially those affecting the bones or calcium levels. Dental check-ups are recommended before starting Xgeva to minimize the risk of jaw complications.
