Pack Size: 100's
Manufactured By: Shaigan Pharmaceuticals
Used For:
- Warfarin is an anticoagulant (blood thinner) used to prevent and treat blood clots, reducing the risk of stroke, heart attack, or other serious conditions caused by blood clots. It is commonly prescribed for conditions such as atrial fibrillation, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, and after certain types of surgeries, like heart valve replacement.
Side Effects:
- Common: Bleeding (e.g., nosebleeds, gum bleeding, or easy bruising), nausea, or hair loss
- Less Common: Fatigue, dizziness, or abdominal pain
- Rare but Serious: Severe bleeding (e.g., in the brain or gastrointestinal tract), allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing), or liver damage
Precautions:
- Regular monitoring: Warfarin requires frequent blood tests (INR - International Normalized Ratio) to ensure the blood is not too thin or too thick. Dosing adjustments are often required.
- Dietary considerations: Foods rich in vitamin K (e.g., leafy greens) can interfere with warfarin's effectiveness, so it's important to maintain a consistent intake of vitamin K.
- Drug interactions: Many medications (including over-the-counter drugs and herbal supplements like St. John’s wort) can interact with warfarin, affecting its effectiveness or increasing the risk of bleeding. Always inform your healthcare provider of any new medications.
- Pregnancy: Warfarin is generally contraindicated during pregnancy, as it can cause birth defects or bleeding complications. Alternative anticoagulants are often recommended during pregnancy.
- Risk of bleeding: People with a history of bleeding disorders, recent surgery, or trauma should use warfarin with caution.
