Used For:

• Empagliflozin is a medication used primarily to manage type 2 diabetes. It works by inhibiting the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) in the kidneys, which reduces glucose reabsorption and promotes its excretion in the urine. It helps lower blood sugar levels and may also reduce the risk of cardiovascular events in people with diabetes and heart disease. In addition, it is sometimes used to treat heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF).

Side Effects:

• Common: Urinary tract infections, increased urination, dehydration, or dizziness
• Less Common: Yeast infections, low blood pressure (hypotension), or elevated blood ketones (ketoacidosis)
• Rare but Serious: Kidney problems, severe allergic reactions, or high potassium levels (hyperkalemia)

Precautions:

• Use with caution in individuals with kidney problems, as it may reduce kidney function further
• Not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless advised by a healthcare provider
• Monitor blood pressure and kidney function regularly while on treatment
• Be cautious if also taking diuretics or medications that lower blood pressure, as this can increase the risk of dehydration or low blood pressure
