Used For:

  • Linezolid is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections, particularly those caused by Gram-positive bacteria. It is commonly prescribed for serious infections like pneumonia, skin infections, and infections caused by resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE).

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, and dizziness
  • Less Common: Insomnia, rash, or mouth sores
  • Rare but Serious: Serotonin syndrome (a potentially life-threatening condition when combined with other medications that affect serotonin levels), bone marrow suppression (leading to low blood cell counts), or peripheral neuropathy

Precautions:

  • Caution is advised in patients with a history of high blood pressure or those taking medications that affect serotonin levels (e.g., antidepressants)
  • Regular monitoring of blood counts may be necessary during long-term use due to the risk of bone marrow suppression
  • Should not be used in combination with certain other medications (e.g., selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs) without a healthcare provider's supervision
