Used For:

• Entecavir is primarily used to treat chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. It works by inhibiting the replication of the hepatitis B virus, reducing viral load, and helping to prevent liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer in individuals with chronic HBV infection.

Side Effects:

• Common: Fatigue, headache, dizziness, and nausea
• Less Common: Abdominal pain, cough, or flu-like symptoms
• Rare but Serious: Lactic acidosis, liver problems (e.g., liver failure, jaundice), severe allergic reactions, and bone density loss

Precautions:

• Regular liver function tests are recommended during treatment, especially in patients with pre-existing liver conditions
• Entecavir may cause lactic acidosis, a potentially life-threatening condition, so caution is necessary in individuals with kidney or liver disease
• Use with caution in individuals with a history of HIV or those co-infected with HIV and HBV, as resistance to both viruses may occur
