Used For:

  • Tenofovir disoproxil is used to treat and manage HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infection and chronic hepatitis B. It works by inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme, which is crucial for the replication of HIV and hepatitis B virus, thus lowering viral load and preventing further damage to the immune system.

Side Effects:

  • Common: Nausea, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, and fatigue
  • Less Common: Abdominal pain, insomnia, or skin rashes
  • Rare but Serious: Kidney damage, bone mineral density loss, lactic acidosis, and liver problems (especially in patients with hepatitis B)

Precautions:

  • Regular kidney function and bone mineral density monitoring are recommended during treatment
  • Caution is advised for individuals with pre-existing kidney conditions or those who are taking other medications that may affect kidney function
  • Not recommended for use in patients with severe liver disease (cirrhosis) unless under careful medical supervision
