Used For:

Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, including:

• Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) infections
• Severe skin and soft tissue infections
• Pneumonia caused by resistant bacteria
• Bone and joint infections
• Endocarditis (heart valve infection)
• Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) colitis (when taken orally)

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Nausea
  • Stomach pain
  • Low blood pressure
  • Rash or itching

• Serious:

  • Kidney toxicity (nephrotoxicity) (monitor kidney function)
  • Hearing loss (ototoxicity) (ringing in ears, hearing problems)
  • Red Man Syndrome (flushing, itching, rash from rapid IV infusion)
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling, breathing issues)
  • Low white blood cell count (increased infection risk)

Precautions:

• Kidney Disease: Dosage adjustments needed to prevent toxicity.
• Hearing Loss: Risk increases with prolonged use or high doses.
• Infusion Rate: Should be given slowly to prevent Red Man Syndrome.
• C. difficile Infections: Only the oral form treats C. diff; IV does not work for this.
• Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Use only if clearly needed; consult a doctor.
