Used For:
- Schizophrenia: Paliperidone is used to treat schizophrenia, a chronic mental health condition that causes symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, and disorganized thinking.
- Schizoaffective Disorder: It is also used to treat schizoaffective disorder, which involves symptoms of both schizophrenia and mood disorders (such as depression or mania).
- Bipolar Disorder (Off-label): Sometimes used off-label for the treatment of bipolar disorder, particularly for managing manic or mixed episodes.
Side Effects:
- Common: Weight gain, headache, drowsiness, dizziness, and nausea.
- Serious: Extrapyramidal symptoms (e.g., tremors, rigidity, restlessness), tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), increased blood sugar, changes in heart rate or blood pressure.
- Other: Elevated prolactin levels (can lead to menstrual disturbances, sexual dysfunction), potential for metabolic changes (e.g., elevated cholesterol, triglycerides).
