Used For

Febuxostat is a medication used for:

• Treatment of gout (a condition caused by high uric acid levels in the blood).
• Lowering uric acid levels in people who cannot take allopurinol or have not responded well to it.

How It Works

• Inhibits xanthine oxidase, an enzyme responsible for uric acid production.
• Reduces uric acid levels, preventing the formation of urate crystals in joints.

Side Effects

Common side effects:

• Nausea
• Joint pain or stiffness
• Rash
• Increased liver enzyme levels

Rare but serious side effects:

• Heart attack or stroke (higher risk in people with heart disease).
