Used For:

  • Respiratory tract infections, such as bronchitis, sinusitis, and pneumonia
  • Skin and soft tissue infections
  • Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) eradication in combination with other medications for peptic ulcer disease
  • Ear infections (otitis media)
  • Tonsillitis or pharyngitis caused by susceptible bacteria

Side Effects:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Abdominal pain
  • Headache
  • Altered taste sensation
  • Rarely: liver dysfunction, allergic reactions, or QT prolongation (heart rhythm issues)

Precautions:

  • Avoid in patients with a history of allergic reactions to macrolides.
  • Use cautiously in patients with liver or kidney impairment.
  • Avoid concurrent use with medications that may prolong QT interval or cause arrhythmias (e.g., certain antipsychotics, antiarrhythmics).
  • Pregnant and breastfeeding women should use only if prescribed by a doctor.
  • Inform your healthcare provider about other medications you are taking, as clarithromycin has multiple drug interactions (e.g., with warfarin, statins, and anticonvulsants).
  • Finish the full course of antibiotics even if symptoms improve to prevent antibiotic resistance.
