Used For:

Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) is an antiviral medication used to treat:

1. Chronic Hepatitis B (HBV)
   • Lowers HBV viral load
   • Reduces risk of liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer
2. HIV-1 Infection (as part of combination therapy)
   • Used in antiretroviral therapy (ART)
   • Helps suppress the HIV virus and prevent disease progression

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Nausea, stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Cough

• Serious (but rare):

  • Kidney problems (less than Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate, TDF)
  • Lactic acidosis (rare but serious; symptoms include muscle pain, difficulty breathing)
  • Liver toxicity (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)
  • Bone density loss (lower risk compared to TDF)

Precautions:

• Monitor kidney function—TAF is safer than TDF but still requires monitoring.
• Not a cure for Hepatitis B or HIV—long-term treatment is needed.
• Avoid stopping suddenly—can cause HBV flare-ups.
• May affect bone health—monitor bone density in high-risk patients.
• Generally safer for kidneys & bones compared to TDF.
