Used For:

Tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) is an antiviral medication used to treat:

1. Chronic Hepatitis B (HBV)

   • Helps reduce HBV viral load.
   • Prevents liver damage, cirrhosis, and liver cancer.

2. HIV-1 Infection (as part of combination therapy)

   • Used in antiretroviral therapy (ART) for HIV.
   • Helps suppress the virus and maintain immune function.

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Nausea, stomach pain
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Cough

• Serious (but rare):

  • Kidney problems (TAF is generally safer than Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate, TDF, but still requires monitoring).
  • Lactic acidosis (rare but life-threatening; symptoms include muscle pain, difficulty breathing).
  • Liver toxicity (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine).
  • Bone density loss (less common than with TDF).

Precautions:

• Monitor kidney function—especially in patients with pre-existing kidney disease.
• Not a cure for Hepatitis B or HIV—long-term treatment is needed.
• Avoid stopping suddenly—can cause HBV flare-ups.
• May affect bone health—monitor bone density in high-risk patients.
• Safe for most patients, including those with mild kidney disease (better than TDF in this regard).
