Used For:
- Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Dexlansoprazole is used to treat GERD, a condition where stomach acid frequently leaks into the esophagus, causing heartburn and irritation.
- Erosive Esophagitis: It helps heal the damage to the esophagus caused by acid reflux.
- Stomach Ulcers: Dexlansoprazole may also be used to treat or prevent ulcers in the stomach and duodenum, often caused by Helicobacter pylori infection or NSAID use.
- Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome: A rare condition where the stomach produces excessive acid, and Dexlansoprazole helps control the acid levels.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Headache.
- Diarrhea or constipation.
- Nausea or vomiting.
- Abdominal pain.
- Flatulence (gas).
Serious side effects (though rare) can include:
- Severe allergic reactions: Rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face/throat.
- Bone fractures: Long-term use of PPIs like dexlansoprazole has been linked to an increased risk of bone fractures.
- Kidney problems: Chronic kidney disease and kidney damage have been reported with long-term use.
- Low magnesium levels: Long-term use can lower magnesium levels, leading to symptoms like muscle spasms, irregular heartbeat, or seizures.
Precautions:
- Kidney disease: Use with caution in people with kidney problems, as long-term use can increase the risk of kidney damage.
- Liver disease: If you have liver disease, your doctor may adjust your dosage.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Dexlansoprazole should be used during pregnancy only if clearly needed, as it’s classified as a category C drug (potential risks to the fetus). It's unclear if it passes into breast milk, so consult a doctor before using it during breastfeeding.
- Drug interactions: Dexlansoprazole can interact with certain medications, including blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), antifungals, and certain antidepressants. Always inform your doctor about other medications you're taking.
