Used For:

  • Respiratory Infections: Such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): To treat infections of the bladder, kidneys, or urethra.
  • Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: For bacterial skin infections.
  • Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland caused by bacterial infection.
  • Chronic Sinusitis: In cases of bacterial sinus infections that don’t respond to other treatments.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

  • Dizziness
  • Tiredness or fatigue
  • Insomnia

Serious side effects, although rare, can include:

  • Tendon damage or rupture: Particularly in older adults or those taking corticosteroids.
  • Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), causing symptoms like pain, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet.
  • Severe allergic reactions: Rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
  • Heart issues: QT prolongation (irregular heartbeats), especially in those with existing heart problems.
  • Mental health side effects: Anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts.

Precautions:

  • Allergies: If you are allergic to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, avoid using it.
  • Tendon Problems: Levofloxacin can increase the risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture, particularly in older adults or those on corticosteroid therapy.
  • Heart Conditions: Levofloxacin can cause heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation). Caution is needed in patients with heart disease, especially those taking other drugs that affect the heart's rhythm.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It should generally be avoided during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester, and may not be suitable for breastfeeding mothers.
  • Kidney Function: Levofloxacin is primarily excreted by the kidneys, so patients with kidney problems may need a lower dose and closer monitoring.
  • Nervous System: Levofloxacin can cause side effects like dizziness or mental health issues, so patients should be cautious when operating machinery or driving.
