Used For:
- Respiratory Infections: Such as pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinusitis.
- Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): To treat infections of the bladder, kidneys, or urethra.
- Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: For bacterial skin infections.
- Prostatitis: Inflammation of the prostate gland caused by bacterial infection.
- Chronic Sinusitis: In cases of bacterial sinus infections that don’t respond to other treatments.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Headache
- Dizziness
- Tiredness or fatigue
- Insomnia
Serious side effects, although rare, can include:
- Tendon damage or rupture: Particularly in older adults or those taking corticosteroids.
- Nerve damage (peripheral neuropathy), causing symptoms like pain, burning, or tingling in the hands or feet.
- Severe allergic reactions: Rash, swelling of the face or throat, difficulty breathing.
- Heart issues: QT prolongation (irregular heartbeats), especially in those with existing heart problems.
- Mental health side effects: Anxiety, confusion, hallucinations, or suicidal thoughts.
Precautions:
- Allergies: If you are allergic to levofloxacin or other fluoroquinolone antibiotics, avoid using it.
- Tendon Problems: Levofloxacin can increase the risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture, particularly in older adults or those on corticosteroid therapy.
- Heart Conditions: Levofloxacin can cause heart rhythm problems (QT prolongation). Caution is needed in patients with heart disease, especially those taking other drugs that affect the heart's rhythm.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: It should generally be avoided during pregnancy, particularly during the first trimester, and may not be suitable for breastfeeding mothers.
- Kidney Function: Levofloxacin is primarily excreted by the kidneys, so patients with kidney problems may need a lower dose and closer monitoring.
- Nervous System: Levofloxacin can cause side effects like dizziness or mental health issues, so patients should be cautious when operating machinery or driving.
