Used For:
Telmisartan and Amlodipine is a combination medication used to manage high blood pressure (hypertension). It combines two mechanisms to lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke:

  • Telmisartan: An angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) that relaxes blood vessels, preventing the hormone angiotensin II from constricting them.
  • Amlodipine: A calcium channel blocker (CCB) that relaxes the blood vessels and improves blood flow by preventing calcium from entering the smooth muscle cells of the arteries.
Side Effects:
  • Common:
    • Dizziness or lightheadedness.
    • Swelling of ankles or feet (edema).
    • Headache.
    • Fatigue or tiredness.
    • Flushing (warmth, redness).
  • Less common:
    • Low blood pressure (hypotension).
    • Palpitations or fast heart rate.
    • Abdominal pain, nausea, or diarrhea.
  • Rare but serious:
    • Severe allergic reactions (rash, swelling, difficulty breathing).
    • Hyperkalemia (elevated potassium levels).
    • Worsening of kidney function.
Precautions:
  • Allergies: Avoid if allergic to telmisartan, amlodipine, or similar medications.
  • Pregnancy: Not recommended during pregnancy, especially in the second and third trimesters (risk of harm to the fetus).
  • Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor, as safety during breastfeeding is unclear.
  • Kidney or liver problems: Use with caution; regular monitoring may be required.
  • Heart conditions: Inform your doctor if you have severe aortic stenosis, heart failure, or a history of heart attack.
  • Potassium levels: Avoid potassium supplements or salt substitutes without consulting your doctor.
  • Alcohol: Limit alcohol intake, as it may increase the risk of dizziness or fainting.
