Product Form: Injection

Pack Size: 1's

Manufactured By: Bosch Pharmaceuticals

Used For:

  • Piperacillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic, and tazobactam is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Together, they form a combination that is effective against a broad range of bacterial infections.
  • Piperacillin-tazobactam is typically used to treat serious infections caused by susceptible bacteria, including:
    • Pneumonia
    • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
    • Intra-abdominal infections
    • Skin and soft tissue infections
    • Sepsis
    • Bacterial infections in the bloodstream
  • The tazobactam component inhibits beta-lactamase enzymes produced by certain bacteria to break down antibiotics like piperacillin, enhancing its effectiveness against resistant strains.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects:
    • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal discomfort.
    • Headache or dizziness.
    • Rash or itching.
  • Serious Side Effects:
    • Allergic reactions, such as anaphylaxis, swelling of the face or throat, and severe skin reactions.
    • Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea (C. diff), which can cause severe diarrhea and intestinal damage.
    • Liver damage, indicated by jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) or abnormal liver function tests.
    • Kidney problems, including acute kidney failure.
    • Blood disorders, such as low white blood cell count (leukopenia), low platelet count (thrombocytopenia), or anemia.
  • Other Considerations: The combination may also cause electrolyte imbalances, such as changes in potassium or sodium levels.

Precautions:

  • Allergic Reactions: If you have a history of allergies to penicillins or cephalosporins, use this combination with caution, as it can cause severe allergic reactions.
  • Kidney Function: Piperacillin-tazobactam is cleared through the kidneys, so it should be used cautiously in individuals with renal impairment or kidney disease. Dosage adjustments may be needed for patients with poor kidney function.
  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Piperacillin-tazobactam is generally considered safe during pregnancy (Category B), but it should still be used under medical supervision. It is excreted in breast milk, so caution is advised for breastfeeding mothers.
  • Superinfection Risk: Prolonged use can lead to superinfections, particularly with resistant organisms such as fungi or C. difficile, which may require additional treatment.
  • Diarrhea: If you experience severe diarrhea during or after treatment, contact your doctor, as it may indicate an infection with C. difficile.
