Used For:
- Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and heart failure.
- It is also prescribed to protect kidney function in people with diabetes and diabetic nephropathy (kidney damage due to diabetes).
- Losartan can be used to reduce the risk of stroke in people with high blood pressure and left ventricular hypertrophy (enlarged heart).
- In some cases, it may be prescribed to reduce the risk of developing kidney problems in individuals with type 2 diabetes.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Dizziness, lightheadedness, especially when standing up (orthostatic hypotension), fatigue, headache, and cold-like symptoms (nasal congestion or sore throat).
-
Serious Side Effects:
- Hyperkalemia (high potassium levels in the blood), which can lead to heart problems.
- Low blood pressure (hypotension), especially after the first dose or dose increases.
- Kidney problems, which can sometimes lead to acute kidney failure.
- Angioedema (swelling of the face, lips, or throat), which can be life-threatening.
- Liver dysfunction (rare).
Precautions:
- Kidney Function: Losartan can affect kidney function, so it should be used cautiously in people with pre-existing kidney disease. Regular kidney function tests are recommended.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Losartan is contraindicated during pregnancy (Category D), particularly in the second and third trimesters, as it can harm the fetus. It should also be avoided during breastfeeding.
- Electrolyte Imbalance: Losartan can cause hyperkalemia (high potassium levels), so potassium levels should be monitored regularly, particularly in those who are taking potassium supplements or potassium-sparing diuretics.
- Blood Pressure: If blood pressure becomes too low (especially after the first dose), it may require adjustment or discontinuation of the medication. Symptoms of low blood pressure may include dizziness or fainting.
- Drug Interactions: Losartan may interact with certain medications, including diuretics (water pills), NSAIDs (e.g., ibuprofen), and other blood pressure medications. These interactions can affect kidney function or cause excessive drops in blood pressure.
