Product Description
Product Name: Tamsodan SR Tablets 0.40 mg
Product Form: Tablets
Pack Size: 10's
Manufactured By: Danas Pharmaceuticals
Used For:
- Tamsulosin is an alpha-1 adrenergic blocker used primarily to treat symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is an enlarged prostate that can cause urinary problems in men.
- It works by relaxing the muscles in the prostate and the bladder neck, making it easier to urinate and relieving symptoms like frequent urination, urgency, weak stream, and difficulty starting urination.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Dizziness, headache, fatigue, nasal congestion, and retrograde ejaculation (a condition where semen enters the bladder instead of being expelled from the body during orgasm).
- Serious Side Effects: Low blood pressure (hypotension), especially when standing up (orthostatic hypotension), which can cause dizziness or fainting, particularly when first starting the medication or increasing the dose. Priapism (prolonged, painful erection) is a rare but serious side effect.
- Other Effects: Some men may experience sexual dysfunction, including difficulty with ejaculation or erection, and eye complications during cataract surgery (known as Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome).
Precautions:
- Blood Pressure: Tamsulosin can cause a drop in blood pressure, especially when standing up. It is recommended to monitor blood pressure regularly and rise slowly from a sitting or lying position.
- Cataract Surgery: Patients taking tamsulosin should inform their eye surgeon before cataract surgery, as tamsulosin can cause Intraoperative Floppy Iris Syndrome, leading to surgical complications.
- Liver and Kidney Function: Tamsulosin should be used cautiously in individuals with severe liver or kidney disease, as the drug is metabolized by the liver and eliminated through the kidneys.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Tamsulosin is not intended for use in women and should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding. It is specifically prescribed for men with BPH.
- Drug Interactions: Tamsulosin can interact with other medications that lower blood pressure, such as antihypertensive drugs, nitrates, and PDE5 inhibitors (e.g., sildenafil). It is important to inform your healthcare provider of all medications you're taking.
