Used For:

This combination is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used for treating severe bacterial infections.

• Piperacillin (Penicillin-class Antibiotic):

  • Kills bacteria by disrupting their cell walls.
  • Effective against Gram-positive & Gram-negative bacteria, including Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

• Tazobactam (Beta-lactamase Inhibitor):

  • Blocks bacterial enzymes that break down Piperacillin.
  • Extends effectiveness against drug-resistant bacteria.

• Pneumonia (hospital-acquired, ventilator-associated)
• Urinary tract infections (complicated UTIs)
• Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, appendicitis)
• Skin & soft tissue infections
• Bone & joint infections
• Sepsis (blood infections)
• Gynecological infections (pelvic inflammatory disease)

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Rash, itching
  • Injection site pain
  • Headache

• Serious (but rare):

  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Liver toxicity (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)
  • Clostridium difficile infection (severe diarrhea)
  • Low blood counts (platelets, white blood cells)
  • Kidney damage (rare, but possible in high doses or prolonged use)

Precautions:

• Not for patients allergic to Penicillins or Cephalosporins.
• Monitor kidney & liver function—especially in long-term use.
• Use cautiously in bleeding disorders—may slightly increase bleeding risk.
• Adjust dose in kidney disease.
