- Montelukast is a leukotriene receptor antagonist used to treat and prevent symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) and asthma.
- It is commonly prescribed to prevent asthma attacks and to relieve seasonal or perennial allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, and nasal congestion.
- Montelukast can also help prevent exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (narrowing of the airways during physical activity) in individuals with asthma.
Side Effects:
- Common Side Effects: Headache, stomach pain, diarrhea, and cold-like symptoms (cough, nasal congestion).
- Serious Side Effects: Mood changes, including depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts (though rare). Allergic reactions such as rash, swelling, or difficulty breathing. Rare cases of liver problems have been reported.
- Other Effects: Some people may experience sleep disturbances, including vivid dreams or insomnia, and joint pain.
Precautions:
- Mental Health: Montelukast has been associated with mood and behavioral changes in some people, including depression and suicidal thoughts. It should be used with caution in individuals with a history of mental health disorders.
- Liver Function: People with liver problems should use montelukast cautiously, as liver function should be monitored.
- Asthma Control: Montelukast is not intended for the acute relief of asthma attacks. It is used as a long-term treatment to help control symptoms, but for immediate asthma relief, a rescue inhaler should be used.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Montelukast is considered safe during pregnancy (Category B), but it should still be used under the guidance of a healthcare provider. It passes into breast milk, so caution is advised for breastfeeding mothers.
- Drug Interactions: Montelukast may interact with certain medications, including phenobarbital and rifampin, which can reduce its effectiveness. Always inform a healthcare provider of any other medications being taken.
