Product Description
Product Name: Tacogen Capsules 1mg
Product Form: Capsules
Pack Size: 50's
Manufactured By: Allmed Laboratories
Used For:
- Organ Transplant Rejection Prevention: Tacrolimus is commonly used after kidney, liver, or heart transplants to help prevent the body from rejecting the new organ.
- Autoimmune Skin Conditions: In its topical form, tacrolimus can treat inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema (atopic dermatitis) when other treatments have not worked.
- Other Autoimmune Conditions: Occasionally used in conditions where immune suppression is needed, like certain cases of rheumatoid arthritis or lupus, but this is less common.
Side Effects:
Common side effects (when taken orally) include:
- Tremors
- Headache
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Insomnia
- Increased blood pressure
- Kidney dysfunction
For topical tacrolimus (ointment), common side effects include:
- Skin burning or itching (especially when first applied)
- Redness or irritation at the application site
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight
Serious side effects (rare but possible) include:
- Infections: Tacrolimus can weaken the immune system, making you more susceptible to infections.
- Kidney damage: Long-term use can lead to nephrotoxicity (kidney damage), particularly in transplant patients.
- High blood sugar: This may lead to diabetes, especially in those already at risk.
- High potassium levels: This can cause electrolyte imbalances.
- Cancer risk: Tacrolimus may slightly increase the risk of certain cancers, such as skin cancer or lymphoma, particularly with long-term use.
- Liver dysfunction: Elevated liver enzymes and, in severe cases, liver damage.
- Allergic reactions: Rare but serious, such as swelling, rash, or difficulty breathing.
Precautions:
- Infection risk: Due to immunosuppressive effects, tacrolimus users should avoid exposure to infections and practice good hygiene. Report any signs of infection, like fever or sore throat, to your doctor.
- Kidney function monitoring: Regular blood tests to check kidney function are essential, especially for transplant patients.
- Avoid grapefruit: Grapefruit and grapefruit juice can increase tacrolimus levels in the blood, raising the risk of side effects.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Tacrolimus should only be used in pregnancy if the benefits outweigh the risks. It may pass into breast milk, so consult your doctor if breastfeeding.
