Product Description

Product Name: Sycorest Tablets 1mg

Product Form:  Tablets

Pack Size: 10's

Manufactured By: Shaheen Pharmaceuticals

Used For:

  1. Schizophrenia: Risperidone is used to manage symptoms of schizophrenia, including delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking.
  2. Bipolar Disorder: It is used to treat manic episodes and mood swings associated with bipolar disorder, either as a single medication or in combination with other mood stabilizers.
  3. Autism: Risperidone helps to control irritability, aggression, and mood swings in children and adolescents with autism spectrum disorder.
  4. Other Off-label Uses: It may be used in some cases for major depressive disorder, anxiety disorders, or Tourette's syndrome, especially when other treatments have not been effective.

Risperidone is believed to work by blocking dopamine receptors in the brain, which helps reduce symptoms of psychosis like delusions and hallucinations. It also affects serotonin receptors, which can help regulate mood, anxiety, and other emotional states. This combined action helps stabilize mood and thought processes.

Side Effects:

Common side effects of risperidone include:

  • Drowsiness or sedation
  • Weight gain
  • Increased appetite
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when standing up)
  • Restlessness or akathisia (a feeling of inner restlessness or the need to move constantly)
  • Tremors or other involuntary movements (due to its effect on dopamine)
  • Dry mouth or constipation

Serious side effects can include:

  • Extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS): Movement disorders, including tremors, rigidity, or difficulty with coordination.
  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A rare but life-threatening condition characterized by fever, muscle rigidity, altered mental status, and autonomic dysfunction.
  • Tardive Dyskinesia (TD): Involuntary, repetitive movements, usually involving the face and mouth, that can occur with long-term use.
  • Increased blood sugar levels or diabetes: Risperidone may increase the risk of developing diabetes or worsen existing diabetes.
  • Prolonged QT interval: This can lead to serious heart rhythm problems.

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Risperidone should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the risk. It passes into breast milk, so caution is needed if breastfeeding.
  • Heart Problems: If you have a history of heart disease, particularly arrhythmias, inform your doctor, as risperidone can affect heart rhythm.
  • Liver or Kidney Disease: Risperidone is metabolized by the liver, so dosage adjustments may be necessary for individuals with liver or kidney problems.
  • Elderly Patients: Older adults, especially those with dementia-related psychosis, are at an increased risk of serious side effects, including stroke or death, so risperidone should be used cautiously in these populations.
  • Drug Interactions: Risperidone may interact with other medications, including certain antidepressants, anticonvulsants, and antihypertensive drugs, so it’s essential to inform your doctor about all other medications you're taking.
