Product Description
Product Name: Sustac Tablets 6.4mg
Product Form: Tablets
Pack Size: 10's
Manufactured By: The Searle Company
Used For:
- Angina Pectoris (Chest Pain): Glyceryl trinitrate is commonly used to relieve or prevent chest pain associated with angina (a condition where the heart doesn't get enough oxygen-rich blood).
- Heart Failure: It may be used in some cases of heart failure to reduce the heart's workload and improve circulation.
- Acute Myocardial Infarction (Heart Attack): In some instances, glyceryl trinitrate is given during a heart attack to relieve pain and improve blood flow to the heart.
- Hypertension (High Blood Pressure): Sometimes used in emergencies to rapidly lower blood pressure, especially in hypertensive crises.
Glyceryl trinitrate is converted into nitric oxide in the body, which causes the smooth muscles in blood vessel walls to relax. This leads to:
- Vasodilation: Widening of blood vessels, which helps improve blood flow and reduces the strain on the heart.
- Decreased oxygen demand: By reducing the amount of work the heart has to do, it lowers the oxygen demand of the heart muscle, thus preventing chest pain (angina).
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Headache: A frequent side effect due to the dilation of blood vessels.
- Dizziness or lightheadedness (especially when standing up quickly, due to lowered blood pressure)
- Flushing or redness of the skin
- Nausea or vomiting
- Tachycardia (increased heart rate)
Serious side effects include:
- Severe hypotension (very low blood pressure)
- Fainting or syncope (loss of consciousness)
- Severe allergic reactions: Symptoms like swelling, difficulty breathing, or rash (though rare).
Precautions:
- Hypotension: Glyceryl trinitrate should be used with caution in individuals with low blood pressure (hypotension), as it can further lower blood pressure.
- Recent Heart Attack or Stroke: If you have recently had a heart attack or stroke, consult your healthcare provider before using glyceryl trinitrate.
- Head Injury: Because it can lower blood pressure, glyceryl trinitrate should be used cautiously in individuals with head trauma or those at risk of intracranial bleeding.
- Medications: Be cautious when taking glyceryl trinitrate with medications like erectile dysfunction drugs (e.g., sildenafil, tadalafil), as the combination can cause a dangerous drop in blood pressure.
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Glyceryl trinitrate is generally considered safe during pregnancy when prescribed, but consult a doctor before using it while breastfeeding.
