Product Description
Product Name: Suprimun Tablets 500mg
Product Form: Tablets
Pack Size: 50's
Manufactured By: Allmed Laboratories
Used For:
-
Organ Transplantation:
- Primarily used in kidney, heart, and liver transplants to prevent rejection of the transplanted organ by suppressing the immune system's response.
-
Autoimmune Diseases:
- Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE): To reduce inflammation and prevent organ damage due to lupus.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: As part of the treatment regimen to control severe cases.
- Other conditions where the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue, like certain forms of vasculitis.
- Mycophenolate mofetil inhibits the enzyme inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase (IMPDH), which plays a key role in the production of purines, essential for the proliferation of T and B lymphocytes (types of immune cells). By suppressing these cells, the immune response is reduced, preventing the body from rejecting the transplant or attacking its own tissues in autoimmune diseases.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
- Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or abdominal pain
- Increased risk of infection: Due to suppression of the immune system
- Fatigue or drowsiness
- Headache
- Rashes or other skin reactions
- Elevated blood pressure (hypertension)
Serious side effects include:
- Infections: Because Mycophenolate suppresses the immune system, it increases the risk of bacterial, viral, or fungal infections.
- Blood disorders: It may cause low blood cell counts, leading to conditions like anemia (low red blood cells), leukopenia (low white blood cells), or thrombocytopenia (low platelets).
- Liver damage: Symptoms may include yellowing of the skin or eyes (jaundice), dark urine, and fatigue.
- Cancer risk: Long-term use of immunosuppressants like Mycophenolate may increase the risk of certain cancers, particularly skin cancer and lymphoma.
Precautions:
- Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Mycophenolate mofetil is teratogenic, meaning it can cause birth defects or miscarriage if taken during pregnancy. It should not be used in pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception during treatment. It is also not recommended while breastfeeding.
- Infections: Since it suppresses the immune system, you should avoid exposure to infections and promptly report any signs of infection (fever, sore throat, etc.).
- Liver and Kidney Function: Mycophenolate should be used with caution in individuals with liver or kidney disease, and regular monitoring of liver and kidney function is required.
- Vaccines: Live vaccines (e.g., MMR, chickenpox) should be avoided during treatment because the immune system is suppressed.
- Drug Interactions: Mycophenolate can interact with other medications, such as antacids, cyclosporine, or antibiotics, which can affect its efficacy or increase side effects. Always inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you're taking.
