Used For:

This combination is a broad-spectrum antibiotic used to treat severe bacterial infections.

• Cefoperazone (Third-generation Cephalosporin):

  • Kills bacteria by disrupting their cell wall.
  • Effective against Gram-positive & Gram-negative bacteria, including some resistant strains.

• Sulbactam (Beta-lactamase Inhibitor):

  • Prevents bacterial enzymes from breaking down Cefoperazone.
  • Extends the antibiotic’s effectiveness against resistant bacteria.

• Respiratory infections (pneumonia, bronchitis)
• Urinary tract infections (complicated UTIs)
• Intra-abdominal infections (peritonitis, biliary tract infections)
• Skin & soft tissue infections
• Bone & joint infections
• Septicemia (blood infections)
• Gynecological infections (pelvic inflammatory disease)

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Rash, itching
  • Pain at the injection site
  • Headache

• Serious (but rare):

  • Allergic reactions (swelling, difficulty breathing)
  • Liver toxicity (yellowing of skin/eyes, dark urine)
  • Clostridium difficile infection (severe diarrhea)
  • Bleeding tendency (Cefoperazone may interfere with blood clotting)

Precautions:

• Not for people with cephalosporin or penicillin allergy.
• Monitor liver function—especially in long-term use.
• May increase bleeding risk—avoid in patients with bleeding disorders.
• Adjust dose in kidney or liver disease.
• Avoid alcohol during and after treatment (Cefoperazone may cause a disulfiram-like reaction—flushing, nausea, vomiting).
