Common side effects include:
- Drowsiness or sedation
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Nausea and vomiting
- Increased salivation
- Diarrhea
Other possible side effects (less common) include:
- Weight gain
- Menstrual irregularities: Due to increased prolactin levels, which can lead to galactorrhea (breast milk production) or amenorrhea (absence of menstruation).
- Breast tenderness or enlargement in both men and women (gynecomastia)
- Movement disorders: Like tremors, muscle stiffness, or restlessness (extrapyramidal symptoms), especially with prolonged use.
Precautions:
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Levosulpiride should be used during pregnancy and breastfeeding only if absolutely necessary, as it may affect the baby. Consult your doctor before use.
- Kidney and liver function: Patients with liver or kidney issues should use levosulpiride with caution, as it may require dose adjustments.
- Prolactin levels: Levosulpiride may increase prolactin levels, leading to hormonal side effects (e.g., menstrual irregularities, breast changes). Patients with prolactin-dependent conditions should use it with caution.
- Movement disorders: Those with a history of movement disorders or Parkinson’s disease should use levosulpiride cautiously, as it can increase the risk of extrapyramidal symptoms.
- Driving and machinery: Levosulpiride may cause drowsiness or dizziness, so avoid activities requiring full alertness, like driving, until you know how it affects you.
