  • Nausea
  • Indigestion or gas

Rare but serious side effects include:

  • Allergic reactions: Rash, itching, or swelling, especially of the face or throat, and difficulty breathing.
  • Aluminum toxicity: In patients with kidney disease, sucralfate (which contains aluminum) can lead to an accumulation of aluminum in the body, potentially causing toxicity.

Precautions:

  • Kidney disease: Sucralfate contains aluminum, which can build up in patients with kidney impairment and lead to toxicity. Patients with kidney disease should use sucralfate with caution and under a doctor’s supervision.
  • Drug interactions: Sucralfate may interfere with the absorption of certain medications, such as antibiotics (e.g., tetracycline, fluoroquinolones), thyroid medications, and antacids. It's recommended to take sucralfate at least 2 hours before or after other medications to avoid interactions.
