Used For:
- Osteoarthritis: To relieve joint pain, stiffness, and inflammation.
- Rheumatoid arthritis: Reduces pain and swelling in joints.
- Ankylosing spondylitis: For pain and stiffness in the spine.
- Gout: Used to relieve pain and inflammation during acute gout attacks.
- Chronic musculoskeletal pain: In conditions like back pain or other soft tissue inflammations.
Side Effects:
- Gastrointestinal issues: Stomach pain, indigestion, nausea, or diarrhea. COX-2 inhibitors generally have fewer GI side effects than traditional NSAIDs but can still cause ulcers or bleeding with long-term use.
- Headache or dizziness.
- Hypertension: Can lead to an increase in blood pressure.
- Edema (swelling) in the legs or ankles.
- Liver enzyme abnormalities: Rarely, it may affect liver function.
- Heart-related risks: Increased risk of cardiovascular events such as heart attack or stroke, especially in people with pre-existing cardiovascular conditions.
Precautions:
- Heart disease: Etoricoxib can increase the risk of heart attacks or strokes, especially with long-term use or in those with existing cardiovascular issues.
- Hypertension: Regular blood pressure monitoring is advised, as etoricoxib can cause or worsen high blood pressure.
- Kidney disease: Use cautiously in patients with kidney impairment, as NSAIDs can further compromise kidney function.
- Liver disease: Avoid or use cautiously in patients with liver problems, as it can affect liver enzymes.
- Gastrointestinal issues: Although it is gentler on the stomach than traditional NSAIDs, it still poses a risk of ulcers and GI bleeding, especially in people with a history of GI problems.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Etoricoxib is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless prescribed by a doctor.
