Used For:

  • High cholesterol (Hyperlipidemia): Particularly to lower LDL (bad cholesterol) and total cholesterol.
  • Prevention of cardiovascular disease: To reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke, and other complications in individuals with risk factors like high cholesterol, hypertension, or diabetes.
  • Atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries): To prevent progression of coronary artery disease.
  • Familial hypercholesterolemia: A genetic disorder leading to high cholesterol levels.

Side Effects:

  • Muscle pain or weakness (myopathy), which may lead to a rare but serious condition called rhabdomyolysis (muscle breakdown) in severe cases.
  • Liver enzyme abnormalities: This can indicate liver damage, so liver function should be monitored during treatment.
