Used For:
- Fungal infections of the skin, nails, mouth, and throat (e.g., onychomycosis, oral thrush).
- Systemic fungal infections: Such as histoplasmosis, blastomycosis, coccidioidomycosis, aspergillosis, and cryptococcal meningitis.
- Yeast infections: Caused by Candida species, including esophageal candidiasis or vulvovaginal candidiasis.
Side Effects:
- Gastrointestinal issues: Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or diarrhea.
- Headache and dizziness.
- Liver toxicity: Liver function should be monitored, as itraconazole can cause liver damage (e.g., elevated liver enzymes).
- Skin rash: Including hives or itching.
- Swelling of the ankles or legs (edema).
- Fatigue or feeling generally unwell.
- Low potassium levels (hypokalemia) in some cases.
- Cardiovascular effects: It can affect heart rhythm (QT prolongation), particularly in high doses or if used with certain other drugs.
Precautions:
