Used For

  • Ivabradine is used to treat chronic stable angina (chest pain) and heart failure in patients with reduced ejection fraction. It works by slowing the heart rate, allowing the heart to pump more efficiently and reducing the heart's workload.

Side Effects

  • Common: Fatigue, dizziness, headache, and blurred vision (including a phenomenon known as phosphenes, which are perceived flashes of light).
  • Serious: Bradycardia (abnormally slow heart rate), atrial fibrillation, and severe allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, swelling).

Precautions

  • Heart Rate Monitoring: Regularly monitor heart rate, especially in patients who are also taking other medications that affect heart rate.
  • Medical Conditions: Inform your doctor if you have a history of heart block, sick sinus syndrome, severe hepatic impairment, or other heart rhythm disorders.
  • Pregnancy & Breastfeeding: Consult your doctor, as the safety of ivabradine during pregnancy and breastfeeding has not been fully established.
  • Drug Interactions: Tell your doctor about all medications you are taking, as some drugs can interact with ivabradine and affect its efficacy or increase the risk of side effects. Avoid grapefruit juice, which can increase drug levels in the body.
