Used For
- Levodopa and Carbidopa are used together to treat symptoms of Parkinson’s disease, such as tremors, stiffness, slow movements, and difficulty with balance.
- Levodopa converts to dopamine in the brain, helping to improve motor symptoms.
- Carbidopa prevents the breakdown of levodopa before it reaches the brain, making it more effective and reducing side effects like nausea.
Side Effects
- Common: Nausea, dizziness, dry mouth, drowsiness, headache, and loss of appetite.
- Serious: Hallucinations, confusion, depression, involuntary movements (dyskinesia), low blood pressure upon standing (orthostatic hypotension), and in some cases, motor fluctuations (the "on-off" phenomenon where the medication’s effect fluctuates).
Precautions
- Protein Intake: High-protein foods can interfere with levodopa absorption. A balanced diet with protein spread evenly across meals is often recommended.
