Used For:
Sevelamer is a phosphate binder used in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) on dialysis. It helps to reduce high phosphate levels (hyperphosphatemia) in the blood by preventing phosphate absorption from food. Keeping phosphate levels normal can prevent bone disease and heart problems in CKD patients.
Side Effects:
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Diarrhea or constipation
- Stomach pain or bloating
- Indigestion or gas
- Itching or rash (rare allergic reaction)
Precautions:
- Take with Meals – Sevelamer should be taken with food to work effectively.
- Swallow Whole – Do not crush or chew the tablets.
- Monitor Calcium & Vitamin D Levels – Since it can lower phosphate, it may also affect calcium and vitamin D levels.
- Drug Interactions – Sevelamer can affect the absorption of other medications like antibiotics and thyroid medicines. Take them at least 1 hour before or 3 hours after Sevelamer.
- Pregnancy & Breastfeeding – Consult your doctor before use.
