Used For:

  • Schizophrenia: Haloperidol is often prescribed for managing symptoms of schizophrenia, such as delusions, hallucinations, and disorganized thinking.

  • Tourette Syndrome: Haloperidol may help reduce the frequency and severity of tics in individuals with Tourette syndrome.
  • Severe Behavioral Disorders: It is sometimes used to manage severe behavioral problems in children and adolescents, particularly when other treatments have failed.

  • Common Side Effects:

    • Drowsiness or sedation
    • Dry mouth
    • Blurred vision
    • Constipation
    • Weight gain
  • Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS): These include tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, and tardive dyskinesia (involuntary movements), which can occur due to the drug's effects on the central nervous system.

  • Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS): A rare but serious condition characterized by muscle rigidity, fever, autonomic instability, and altered mental status.

Precautions:

  • Elderly Patients: Caution is advised in elderly patients, especially those with dementia-related psychosis, as there is an increased risk of mortality with antipsychotics in this population.

  • Heart Conditions: Haloperidol can prolong the QT interval and may increase the risk of arrhythmias. Patients with pre-existing heart conditions should be monitored closely.

  • Drug Interactions: Haloperidol can interact with other medications, particularly those that also affect the central nervous system or prolong the QT interval. Always inform healthcare providers of all medications being taken.

  • Withdrawal: Discontinuing haloperidol suddenly can lead to withdrawal symptoms; it should be tapered off under medical supervision.
