Used For:

  • Type 2 Diabetes: Lowers blood glucose levels by combining the effects of empagliflozin and metformin.
    • Empagliflozin: Reduces glucose reabsorption in the kidneys, allowing excess sugar to be excreted through urine.
    • Metformin: Decreases glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity, helping cells use glucose more effectively.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects:
    • Gastrointestinal issues (diarrhea, nausea, stomach upset) mainly due to metformin
    • Urinary tract infections and increased urination due to empagliflozin
    • Increased thirst
    • Genital yeast infections, especially in women
  • Serious Side Effects:
    • Lactic Acidosis (rare but serious): A buildup of lactic acid due to metformin, especially in those with kidney or liver issues.
    • Ketoacidosis: A risk with empagliflozin, where blood ketones increase, even with normal or mildly elevated blood sugar levels.
    • Hypotension: Increased urination from empagliflozin can cause dehydration and low blood pressure.
    • Hypoglycemia: When used with other diabetes medications, especially insulin or sulfonylureas.

Precautions:

  • Kidney Function: Monitor kidney health regularly, as both medications are processed by the kidneys.
  • Avoid in Type 1 Diabetes: Not suitable for type 1 diabetes due to the risk of ketoacidosis.
  • Hydration: Maintain good fluid intake to avoid dehydration from increased urination.
  • Avoid Excessive Alcohol: Alcohol can increase the risk of lactic acidosis with metformin.
