Used For

  • Depression: Commonly prescribed for major depressive disorder in adults and children over 8.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD): Used to reduce symptoms of OCD in adults and children over 7.
  • Panic Disorder: Helps manage panic attacks and reduce panic-related symptoms.
  • Bulimia Nervosa: Used to decrease binge-eating and purging behaviors in adults.
  • Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD): Treats symptoms such as mood swings, irritability, and depression associated with PMDD.

Side Effects

  • Common: Nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, insomnia, sweating, and headaches.
  • Serious: Increased risk of suicidal thoughts, particularly in children, teens, and young adults; serotonin syndrome (confusion, hallucinations, and severe muscle stiffness).
  • Long-Term: Sexual side effects, weight changes, and fatigue.

Precautions

  • Suicidal Thoughts: Monitor closely for worsening depression or unusual mood changes, especially at the beginning of treatment or dose changes.
