Used For:

  • Chronic Iron Overload: Primarily in patients with conditions like thalassemia, sickle cell disease, or myelodysplastic syndromes, where regular blood transfusions are required.
  • Iron Overload Not Due to Blood Transfusions: In certain non-transfusion-dependent conditions where the body accumulates excess iron on its own.

Side Effects:

  • Gastrointestinal issues (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain)
  • Skin rash or itching
  • Increased liver enzymes, which can indicate liver irritation
  • Kidney effects, including increased creatinine levels
  • Rarely, serious kidney or liver problems
  • Hearing or vision issues (in rare cases, with prolonged use)

Precautions:

  • Regular Monitoring of Liver and Kidney Function: Blood tests should be done frequently to monitor liver and kidney health.
  • Avoid in Severe Kidney or Liver Impairment: Not recommended for patients with significant kidney or liver problems.
  • Hydrate Well: Drink plenty of fluids to support kidney function and enhance drug excretion.
  • Avoid NSAIDs and Other Nephrotoxic Drugs: These may increase the risk of kidney issues when combined with deferasirox.
