Used For:

  • Hyperphosphatemia in CKD: Reduces phosphate levels in the blood, which helps prevent bone disorders and cardiovascular complications in patients with chronic kidney disease on dialysis.

Side Effects:

  • Common Side Effects: These may include gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, or abdominal pain.
  • Serious Side Effects: Rarely, it can cause severe gastrointestinal complications like bowel obstruction, particularly in patients with a history of gastrointestinal issues.

Precautions:

  • Swallowing Difficulty: Use cautiously in patients with difficulty swallowing, as sevelamer tablets can cause choking or esophageal obstruction if not taken with adequate water.
  • Vitamin Deficiencies: Sevelamer may decrease the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) and folic acid, so patients may require supplementation.
  • Drug Interactions: Sevelamer can interfere with the absorption of certain medications. It is generally recommended to take other medications at least one hour before or three hours after sevelamer.
