Used for

  • Schizophrenia: Helps reduce hallucinations, delusions, and thought disturbances.
  • Bipolar Disorder: Effective for both manic and depressive episodes.
  • Major Depressive Disorder (Adjunct Therapy): Sometimes used alongside antidepressants.
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) (Off-label Use): May help manage severe anxiety in some cases.

Side Effects

  • Common: Drowsiness, dizziness, dry mouth, weight gain, increased appetite.
  • Less Common: Constipation, blurred vision, low blood pressure (lightheadedness), mild tremors.
  • Serious (Rare):
    • Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS): Muscle stiffness, tremors, restlessness.
    • Metabolic Changes: Increased blood sugar and cholesterol levels.
    • Heart Issues: Irregular heartbeat, prolonged QT interval.
