Used For:

Linezolid is an oxazolidinone antibiotic used to treat serious bacterial infections, especially those resistant to other antibiotics. It is effective against Gram-positive bacteria, including:

• Pneumonia (community-acquired & hospital-acquired)
• Skin & soft tissue infections (including MRSA infections)
• Drug-resistant infections:
  • Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA)
  • Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE)
  • Multi-drug resistant tuberculosis (off-label use)

Side Effects:

• Common:

  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Headache
  • Insomnia
  • Rash

• Serious (but rare):

  • Bone marrow suppression (can cause low red/white blood cells & platelets)
  • Peripheral neuropathy (nerve damage, tingling, numbness)
  • Serotonin syndrome (if taken with SSRIs or other serotonergic drugs)
  • Lactic acidosis (severe fatigue, nausea, rapid breathing)
  • Optic neuropathy (vision problems with long-term use)

Precautions:

• Avoid prolonged use (>2 weeks) without monitoring (risk of blood disorders & nerve damage).
• Monitor complete blood counts (CBC) in long-term therapy.
• Use caution in patients on antidepressants (SSRIs, MAOIs) to avoid serotonin syndrome.
• Avoid tyramine-rich foods (aged cheese, wine, soy sauce) to prevent high blood pressure.
• Caution in liver & kidney disease—adjust dosage if needed.
