Used For:

Questran contains cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant primarily used for:

• Hypercholesterolemia (High Cholesterol): Lowers cholesterol levels by binding bile acids in the intestines, preventing their reabsorption, which causes the liver to use cholesterol to produce more bile acids, thus lowering blood cholesterol.
• Chronic Diarrhea: Often prescribed to manage diarrhea caused by conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or bile acid malabsorption.
• Pruritus (Itching) from Biliary Obstruction: Helps alleviate itching associated with partial biliary obstruction by binding bile acids and reducing their effects on the skin.

Side Effects:

Common side effects may include:

• Constipation: The most frequent side effect, which can sometimes be severe.
• Bloating or gas
• Nausea
• Heartburn
• Abdominal discomfort

Less common but more serious side effects include:

• Vitamin deficiencies: May interfere with the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K) if taken long-term.
• Hyperchloremic acidosis: A rare condition involving an imbalance in blood acidity.
• Gallstones: Though rare, increased cholesterol in bile can increase the risk of gallstone formation.

Precautions:

• Constipation: Individuals prone to constipation should take it cautiously, and it may require a stool softener or increased fiber and water intake.
• Bile duct obstruction: Should not be used in complete biliary obstruction, as it relies on bile flow to work.
• Vitamin absorption: Long-term use may decrease the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Vitamin supplementation may be recommended by your doctor.
• Drug interactions: Questran can bind with and reduce the absorption of certain medications, such as warfarin, thyroid hormones, and certain diuretics. Take other medications at least 1 hour before or 4 to 6 hours after Questran.
