Manufactured By: CCL Pharmaceuticals
Used For:
- Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus: Piomet helps manage blood glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes, especially when diet, exercise, and other medications are not sufficiently effective. Pioglitazone increases the body’s sensitivity to insulin, while Metformin reduces glucose production in the liver and improves insulin sensitivity.
Side Effects:
Common side effects include:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Diarrhea
- Stomach pain or upset
- Headache
- Weight gain
- Fluid retention (edema)
Serious side effects may include:
- Lactic acidosis (a rare but serious side effect linked to Metformin), which can cause symptoms like muscle pain, weakness, difficulty breathing, stomach pain, dizziness, or irregular heartbeats.
- Heart failure: Pioglitazone may increase the risk of heart failure, especially in people with pre-existing heart conditions.
- Bladder cancer: Long-term use of Pioglitazone has been linked to an increased risk of bladder cancer.
- Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia): This is more likely if used with other diabetes medications.
- Liver issues: Symptoms like yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, or light-colored stools may indicate liver problems.
Precautions:
- Heart conditions: Piomet should be used cautiously in people with heart disease or heart failure, as Pioglitazone may increase fluid retention.
- Kidney disease: Since Metformin is primarily excreted by the kidneys, those with kidney issues should avoid or closely monitor their use of this medication to reduce the risk of lactic acidosis.
- Liver disease: Liver function should be monitored, as this medication can affect liver health.
- Bladder cancer: Avoid long-term use if you have a history of bladder cancer.
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Consult your doctor, as Piomet is generally not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
- Alcohol consumption: Alcohol should be avoided, as it can increase the risk of lactic acidosis with Metformin and affect blood sugar control.
