Used For:

Pentaglobin is an immunoglobulin preparation primarily used in cases where there is a need to support the immune system, particularly:

  • Severe bacterial infections: Used in severe bacterial infections, especially in intensive care settings, as it can help improve immune response.
  • Sepsis and septic shock: Often administered to patients with sepsis or septic shock to reduce infection-related complications and support recovery.
  • Immune deficiency: Used in patients with weakened or compromised immune systems to provide passive immunity and boost the body's natural defense.

Pentaglobin contains immunoglobulins (antibodies) that help the immune system fight infections by neutralizing pathogens and supporting immune function.

Side Effects:

Common side effects include:

  • Injection site reactions, such as pain, swelling, or redness
  • Fever, chills, or headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness

Less common but serious side effects may include:

  • Allergic reactions: Swelling of the face, lips, throat, or hives; in severe cases, anaphylactic shock can occur.
  • Kidney problems: Acute kidney failure, though rare, has been reported with immunoglobulin injections.
  • Blood clotting disorders: Increased risk of blood clots, particularly in patients with certain risk factors.
  • Hemolysis: Breakdown of red blood cells, potentially leading to anemia.

Precautions:

  • Allergic history: Patients with a history of allergic reactions to immunoglobulins or other blood products should use Pentaglobin cautiously.
  • Kidney function: Monitor kidney function before and during treatment, as it may cause kidney damage in some patients.
  • Blood clot risks: Patients with clotting disorders, heart disease, or prolonged immobilization should be closely monitored.
  • Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Use in pregnancy or breastfeeding only if clearly needed, under the guidance of a healthcare professional.
  • Avoid mixing: Do not mix with other medications in the same infusion.
